Sun Festival, Special Departure

Sun Festival

Our February 6, 2018 departure will experience this unique event. Ramses II built his temple at Abu Simbel so that the internal chamber would light up two times a year: once on the anniversary of his ascension to the throne (in February), and once on his birthday (in October). Every year on the Sun Festival, crowds gather before sunrise to observe the stream of light gradually sneaking through the stone and enlightening the statuettes of Ramses, Ra and Amun in the central chamber.

Take an in-depth journey back in time to the ancient worlds of Egypt & Jordan. Explore bustling Cairo, cruise down the Nile, float in the Dead Sea and discover the wonders of Petra. Discover a whole world of incredible pyramids, magnificent monuments, beautiful temples and a rich and fascinating history.

Discover the Lost City

Our Egypt and Jordan tour starts in Amman, the capital of Jordan. It’s then on to the Dead Sea, where we enjoy swimming or (floating!) in the sea and indulging in Dead Sea mud treatments – known for their purifying qualities. We continue to Petra, and amazing destination featured in Dennis Bunnik's video clip on this page. The entrance is located at the end of a dark, narrow chasm; words cannot describe the unique beauty of the magnificent entrance to the Treasury. Carved deep into the rich red sandstone, it has a stunning glow to it. Once inside it’s simply amazing as there is a whole underground city to explore. No Egypt and Jordan tour is complete without a visit to Petra – seeing really is believing! From Jordan we fly to Egypt and begin our Egypt tour in Cairo, standing in front of the awe-inspiring Great Pyramids of Giza before continuing on to Luxor and the impressive open-air museum, the Valley of the Kings.

Exploring Egypt

The next part of our Egypt tour is a cruise along Egypt’s Nile River. On the way we stop to enjoy more famous sights of Egypt including the riverside temple of Kom Ombo, the wonderful Edfu temple, and much more. Next stop is Egypt’s beautiful temples of Abu Simbel, where the 4 imposing statues at the entrance stand the height of a 5 storey building. We end this wonderful tour back in Cairo with a visit to the world-famous Egyptian Museum, home to Tutankhamun's priceless treasures, the Citadel of Cairo and the Mohammed Ali Mosque, before a trip to the lively Khan El Khalili bazaar.

Unlike other climates there are two distinct seasons, a long hot summer from May until October and a mild winter from November to April. This being said the most popular times for travel to Egypt are between the months of October and May as the temperature and humidity are the most comfortable.

Currency

Currency

Jordan, Jordanian Dinar

The official currency in Jordan is the Jordanian dinar (JOD or unofficially JD)

  • 1 Jordanian Dinar = 100 qirsh. For example, a price of 3.750 means 3 dinars and 750 qirsh
  • Notes are in the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 dinars
  • Coins are in the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 qirsh

Please Note: Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, upmarket shops and restaurants. It is best to carry local currency in smaller notes or coins, as vendors never seem to have change. It is also very handy when you want to give a tip. Also, Jordanian currency should be left in the country, therefore exchange your currency prior to leaving.

Egypt, Egyptian Pound

The official currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP; symbol £)

  • 1 Egyptian Pound = 100 Piastre (Pt)
  • Notes are in denominations of £200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 and Pt50, 25,10 and 5
  • Coins are in denominations of £1 and Pt50, 25, 20, 10, 5 and 1

Please Note: It's best to build up a supply of the small bills because you'll need them for baksheesh (a request for a tip for services rendered) and small purchases, and many shopkeepers and cabbies will not have - or claim they don't have - change

Egypt & Jordan in Depth The guides were wonderful. Sites were amazing. Unforgettable 5
Very hard to say there were so many highlights. We loved Petra and the Treasury especially the night tour. Magic. We loved the hot air balloon ride over the temples in Egypt. The Nile cruise was lovely. Our guide Mohamad always did his best to get us rooms with a view and he always succeeded. He made our tour special as did Arhmid in Jordan. Christine Klein - March 2017
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Unforgettable, the history, monuments, treasures and achievements of early mankind. 5

Egypt & Jordan in Depth Loved everything, small group and accommodation 5
We loved Petra, Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, camel ride, Egypt was everything we hoped for - the history and temples are unreal. Of course you can't go past the Pyramids and Sphinx. The balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, really it was all great. Our guides were both really good. Betsy Johnstone - February 2017
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Loved Everything: Sites, Accommodation & Guides: Othman, Ibrahim & Hussein 5
From start to finish, our holiday was perfection. This was my 1st time overseas (yes, at 49 years old), and Honi from Bunnik made it effortless...she's an absolute professional. Also our drivers Amr & Aman and Bunnik Reps in Egypt - Mohamed & Saed. They were all wonderful. I am third generation Australian, however my ancestors were from the middle east. Not Egypt, but close neighbors. My connection to Egypt goes beyond my obsession for ancient history and archaeology. During ancient times there was much interaction between my ancestral homelands and Egypt. Who knows, this may be part of where my attachment to Egypt originates from as well as my Uncle Bill (Sir William Bowmore). This was evident when I arrived there, as I felt I was truly 'home'. I have never felt so at peace and happy as when I was in Egypt. The night before leaving for Egypt, I pondered the question as to whether, because I had been obsessed for most of my life, since I was seven years old, if I would be disappointed with the reality once I arrived. Nothing could have been FURTHER from the truth. Egypt FAR SURPASSED anything I could have ever imagined. I love her history, I love her culture, I love her PEOPLE. Jordan, although a more recent interest, has also left an indelible mark within my heart. Our guides were the BEST of the BEST. In Jordan, Othman Qandeel took superb care of us. In Lower Egypt, Dr Ibrahim Selim was amazing. In Upper Egypt, Hussein Hafez was excellent. Everything about our holiday was PERFECT. "A dream, a most beautiful dream". I will return home again to Egypt & Jordan, next year. Catherine Campbell - February 2017
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Loved the mystique and monuments of ancient Egypt 5
Too many highlights to choose from but in Egypt - the air balloon flight over Luxor, the cruise on the Nile River, the visit to the Nubian village and the spectacular vision and information on the pyramids and temples. In Jordan the ancient site of Jerash, the amphitheatre/hippodrome, the enormity of Petra and the understated Little Petra. Sandra Hutchinson - May 2016
Egypt & Jordan in Depth We were so well looked after, saw such amazing sights!! 5
The lost city of Petra, The Valley of the kings, meeting such lovely tour companions ..very important when travelling alone. The care provided by a all Bunniks staff. Monica Ellis - April 2016
Egypt & Jordan in Depth The ancients sites, the history and the scenery... 4
In Jordan, the highlights were Petra, of course, and Jerash, and floating in the Dead Sea. In Egypt, it is much harder to choose. There were wonderful temples, the tomb paintings, the peaceful cruise on the Nile, a lot of delicious food and the company of my fellow travellers. Helen Burlinson - March 2016
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Too much to love!! 5
Nile cruising was fabulous in every area. Wadi Rum and Petra were both awe-inspiring. In Egypt, our guide Ibrahim was passionate about being a guide and making us his family. In Jordan, Ahmad made sure that we saw and experienced all that was important and made sure we had fun. Colin Noorbergen - March 2015
Egypt & Jordan in Depth The realisation of a longtime dream 5
Abdullah was the most delightful, obliging person - charming. Medhat was most pleasant and hugely knowledgeable. Highlights; the exquisite beauty of Tutankhamun's mask, dawn on the Nile boat, standing in front of Abu Simbel, the vivid colours in the tombs of the artisans, the colours of Petra, camel ride in the silence of Wadi Rum. Jerash was much more spectacular than we had imagined. We had a superb chef on the Nile Goddess and the suite was most comfortable. Pat Tod - May 2015
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Loved the Egyptologist guides knowledge, culture, history, food. 5
Highlights - Swimming in pool at Le Meridien & looking at the pyramids. Walking through the Gorge at Petra with water over my ankles as it rained heavily & snowed!! Absolutely frozen & amazing Bedouin hospitality; sharing campfire in a cave & hot sage tea that tasted amazing. Swimming in the Dead Sea. Sameer our driver in Jordan wearing his long Bedouin coat. Loved all the sightseeing & love the knowledge I have acquired since this tour. Susan Munro - April 2015
Egypt & Jordan in Depth The whole trip was excellent 5
Extremely enjoyable, the guides knowledge and their willingness to explain and answer questions made every visit to a sight a very pleasurable experience and enhanced our understanding of the cultural history. The whole trip was a highlight! From the guides to the sights everything was incredible. Peter Clark - February 2015
Egypt & Jordan in Depth So much more than even expected! 5
I recently travelled with 5 others for 25 days in Jordan & Egypt. It was simply the best holiday experienced. Our group had such fun, so many laughs. Our guide Ibrahim & driver Mazin were the best! Egypt was amazing but I fell in love with Jordan - Wadi Rum, Little Petra, Jerash, Petra, Amman's citadel all favorites. Enjoying fresh desserts, traditional dishes, beautiful hotels...congratulations Bunnik, you have got this right. I would ask that Ibrahim and Maxin become Bunnik's preferred guide & driver! Top notch. Adrienne DeKuyer - February 2015
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Felt safe and and no crowds in Egypt and Jordan. 4
Jordan was fantastic - so much history. We really enjoyed the Nile cruise which gave us relaxed access to Luxor, Aswan and the places in between. Great to see both Jordan and Egypt with such small crowds. Trevor Watt - October 2014
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Jordan, Egypt and Bahariya Oasis - a definite must to visit... 5
Don't believe all the media hype about Israel, Jordan and Egypt - I didn't experience any feeling of danger or fear anywhere. Petra, Umm Quais, Jerash and Wadi Rum in Jordan - fantastic! Luxor, the Nile Cruise, Abu Simbel and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo well worth visiting just to see Tutankhamen's gold mask, jewellery and inner sarcophagi - awesome! Then Baharyia Oasis - dune 'surfing' in a 4x4 Landcruiser over the golden sands just outside the oasis - exhilerating! Thanks Bunnik - two fabulous and memorable tours. Ros Burton - September 2014
Egypt & Jordan in Depth I felt it would be good to travel in a small group this time - turned out I was right! 5
In Egypt, it seemed that the temples got better & better as we went further south. Also, the Nile Cruise was around the middle of the tour, so we could really relax. Both guides were very sensitive to our needs, flexible & patient; no question/need was too difficult for either of them. Of course they were also very knowledgeable, especially Ibrahim, with his passion for Egyptology. Cathy Robertsor - March 2014
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Petra was amazing... 4
..a much larger area and more to see than I had understood it to be. I really enjoyed the atmosphere in the Crusader castles in Jordan. I was expecting a knight in armour to walk around a corner and tables to be covered in food; TV memories perhaps. Karnak temple and entering 3 of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings were my Egyptian highlights. Dennis Kimberley - November 2012
Egypt & Jordan in Depth It really was perfect 5
We felt so lucky to be able to see all the wonderful sites with so few other tourists around, we had the best guides in Jordan, Othman made us feel like part of his family Carole Bassam - November 2013
Egypt & Jordan in Depth All Egypt was a highlight, especially having it to ourselves! 5
Dead Sea (and the hotel) was incredible, a must see. View from Umm Quais over all the biblical lands awesome. Alison & Dave Nelson - September 2013
Egypt & Jordan in Depth Enjoyed the whole trip. 4
There is a lot more to Jerash and Petra than I thought. Liked Aswan. We went to Dubai before starting our Tour and we really enjoyed Dubai. Joanne Gehrke - January 2013
Egypt & Jordan in Depth I think we saw everything at it's best! 5
Getting to places early before the crowds was really good & I took hundreds of photographs with not too many tourists in them. Marion Neville - March 2012
