After recently completing a challenging 150 kilometre walking tour in Spain, I decided to finish my holiday by joining in with Bunnik’s Spain, Portugal and Morocco tour for a few days, starting from Lisbon.
Of all of the cities considered when visiting Europe, Lisbon can be regularly overlooked – but what a gem this city is! Lisbon is the oldest city in Western Europe and has an eclectic mix of history, architecture, people and charm.
Our Bunnik sightseeing tour took us to major historical sites including picturesque Park Edward VII, Commerce Square then onto the Jeronimus Monastery. This was built in the 16th century and exudes the magnificence of the empire when King Manuel the first ruled.
We ended our guided tour with visit to Pastel de Belem – a café known for having the best Portuguese tarts in the country. The tarts certainly lived up to their reputation.
Back in the city for the afternoon, I decided to use my free time by taking one of the famous yellow trams which curved around the narrow cobble streets. This proved a perfect way to see the locals, visit the Castle of St George, Lisbon Cathedral and get a great panorama and feel for the city.
Ending my day with watching the sunset and a plate of local seafood, I realised I had already fallen in love with Lisbon, and could not wait for the next installment of my Portugal adventure.
Portugal I will be back!
