Cairo to Zanzibar - OLD Currency
In Egypt:
The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (£E). Notes are in denominations of £E100, £E50, £E20, £E10, £E5, £E1, £E0.50 and £E0.25, and coins are in denominations of 50, 25, 20, 10 and 5 Piastres. It's best to build up a supply of the small bills because you'll need them for baksheesh (a request for a tip for services rendered) and small purchases, and many shopkeepers and cabbies will not have - or claim they don't have - change.
In Kenya:
Kenya Shilling (displayed as Ksh). It is divisible into 100 cents. It is illegal to export Kenyan currency, and is difficult to exchange upon departure. We recommend only changing small amounts of money at a time.
In Zanzibar:
The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (Tsh) which is divisible into 100 cents, however we recommend you carry USD, as almost all hotels and local businesses will request payments in this currency. There are plenty of places to exchange money in the towns and airport, but keep hold of your changing receipts so that you can change your shillings back to hard currency when you leave. Be aware there may be very limited access to credit card facilities, and places which do accept them often charge very high commission levies.
