Egypt, Israel & Jordan - OLD Currency
In Egypt:
The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (£E). Notes are in denominations of £E100, £E50, £E20, £E10, £E5, £E1, £E0.50 and £E0.25, and coins are in denominations of 50, 25, 20, 10 and 5 Piastres. It's best to build up a supply of the small bills because you'll need them for baksheesh (a request for a tip for services rendered) and small purchases, and many shopkeepers and cabbies will not have - or claim they don't have - change.
In Israel:
The New Israeli Shekel/Sheqel, abbreviated as NIS. Money can be exchanged at any of the street exchange bureau, ATM’s or any of Israel’s major banks. When exchanging money at a bank, you will be charged a fixed exchange fee, and if you choose to use an exchange place on the street, you will not be charged for the transaction, but will receive a lower rate than the banks supply.
In Jordan:
The national currency is the Jordanian dinar, abbreviated and generally referred to as JD. The dinar is divided into 100 piasters or 1,000 fils. For example, a price of 3.750 means 3 dinars and 750 fils. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, upmarket shops and restaurants. It is best to carry local currency in smaller notes or coins, as vendors never seem to have change. It is also very handy when you like to give a tip. Jordanian currency should be left in the country, therefore exchange your currency prior to leaving.
