Istanbul to Damascus - OLD Currency
In Turkey:
New Turkish Lira (TRY; symbol YTL) = 100 New Kurus (Ykr).
Notes are in denominations of YTL200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1.
Coins are in denominations of YTL1 and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 New Kurus.
The old Turkkish Lira was taken out of circulation in 1996.
In Syria:
The Syrian pound, locally referred to as the lira, is the official currency. Generally speaking, banks are the best places to exchange money, but there are also plenty of ATMs popping up, especially in Damascus and Aleppo. It's often a hassle (and sometimes impossible) to charge purchases to a credit card - getting cash advances from an ATM using a credit or bank card is probably the most convenient option.
