Laos Mekong Sun Itinerary

Day 1  Australia - Bangkok
Welcome to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand and a bustling city home to almost 12 million people! Upon arrival at the airport, we will be met by our representative and taken to our hotel.

Day 2  Bangkok
Today we enjoy a full day tour of Bangkok including the Grand Palace, which occupies about one square mile and has an intriguing blend of original Thai architecture with European styles which were added during later reigns, The Golden and Emerald Buddha’s. Here we get our first introduction of the Buddhist beliefs and rituals that play such an important part in daily Thai life. You’ll be asked to remove your shoes before entering these temples. In the afternoon we enjoy a cruise through Bangkok's Klongs (Canals). Evening dinner cruise on the Chao Praya River. [B,D]

Day 3  Bangkok - Luang Prabang

We take an early flight to Luang Prabang, famous for its historic temples and beautiful setting. Upon your arrival at Luang Prabang airport you will be picked up and transferred to town. In the afternoon, you will embark on our Laotian cruise ship. After settling into your cabin we begin our Laos sightseeing with a guided walk up Phou Si-hill, which offers a spectacular sunset view over the Mekong as well as the Khan river and the surrounding mountains. In the evening, enjoy a stroll along the Mekong promenade or visit the colourful night market of the local Hmong minority. A delicious welcome dinner is served 
onboard. [B,D]

Day 4  Luang Prabang

A whole day of guided visits to get to know the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage town with its numerous temples and French colonial architecture. Lunch is served in a lovely local restaurant. Tonight is at leisure to choose from Luang Prabang's numerous dining offerings in town or along the Mekong. [B,L]

Day 5  Luang Prabang - Pak Ou
Early this morning we observe the traditional giving of alms in the streets of Luang Prabang. The remainder of the morning is at leisure before departing on our sensational cruise. We cruise north through beautiful scenery and the night is spent on a secluded river bank. [B,L,D]

Day 6  Pak Ou - Tha Deua
This morning we take a short walk through the jungle to explore the famous Pak Ou caves, before visiting a Laotian village. In the village you can observe how the local liquer Lao-Lao is traditionally distilled. Before returning to our cruise ship, we have the possibility to see working elephants in action. This afternoon we enjoy cruising down the Mekong River. [B,L,D]

Day 7  Cruising the mighty Mekong 

We continue cruising south to the Mekong ferry crossing at Tha Deua, connecting Luang Prabang with the Sayaboury province. Further downstream we discover some of the most impressive landscapes and awe-inspiring rock formations. This afternoon we visit a local school before heading north to stop on a sandbank for the night. [B,L,D]

Day 8  Cruising - Luang Prabang

Relax as we cruise along, enjoying the beautiful views and spot local fisherman onshore as we continue to cruise upstream. We disembark to visit the famous Kuang Si-waterfalls, located in a perfect natural setting near Luang Prabang, this multi-tiered waterfall tumbles over limestone formations into a series of turquoise pools. We also stroll through the small village of Tha Pan, where you can observe how the local communities live in this area. In the afternoon we return to Luang Prabang where dinner is served in a local restaurant. [B,L,D]

Day 9  Luang Prabang
Today the ship stays in Luang Prabang and we have the day at leisure to once again enjoy the wonderful town and the atmosphere in Luang Prabang. Our last evening on board will be celebrated with a farewell dinner. Overnight on the Mekong Sun River Boat. [B,D]

Day 10  Luang Prabang - Chiang Mai
After breakfast we disembark and fly to Chiang Mai where we are met and taken to our hotel.  This evening don’t miss Chiang Mai’s colourful evening market! [B]

Day 11  Chiang Mai

An amazing day as we head into the jungle to an elephant training camp!  Say hello, watch them bathe and demonstrate their skills before we have the chance to take an elephant trek into the jungle, followed by a leisurely raft cruise down the river.  You’ll love it!  On our way back to Chiang Mai we visit the beautiful Doi Suthep temple which holds a commanding position overlooking the city. [B]

Day 12  Chiang Mai

Enjoy a full day at leisure.  Relax by the pool, go shopping or even take an optional cycling tour or cooking class!  Tonight there is an option for a farewell dinner at a local 
restaurant. [B]

Day 13  Depart Chiang Mai
Today is at leisure before you commence your journey back home to Australia. [B]

Day 14  Arrive in Australia
