Moscow to Prague Itinerary
Day 1 Depart Australia
Day 2 Arrive in Moscow
Welcome to Moscow. On our arrival we will be met and transferred to our hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure before tonight’s welcome dinner. [D]
Day 3 Moscow
Today we explore Moscow. Highlights include the famous Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral and Moscow University. We also take a walk along historic Old Arbat Street and explore the city’s Grand Metro, which opened in 1935. It’s well known for the ornate design of many of its stations, which contain outstanding examples of socialist realist art and glamorous chandeliers.[B,L]
Day 4 Moscow - Novgorod
This morning is at leisure. In the afternoon we visit the famous Kremlin, the Cold War symbol of Moscow and the USSR. The Kremlin is a massive complex which includes four palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with its Kremlin towers. It is also the official residence of the President of Russia. After sightseeing we enjoy dinner before boarding the overnight sleeper train to Novgorod. [B,D]
We arrive into Novgorod bright and early and transfer to our hotel for breakfast and an early check-in. After breakfast we tour historical Novgorod and visit its Kremlin. We also visit the nearby Yuriev Monastery and the wonderful Museum of Wooden Architecture. [B,L,D]
Day 6 Novgorod - St Petersburg
Today we travel by coach to the grand city of St Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great. St Petersburg was also Lenin’s home town and the birthplace of the Russian revolution. Here we take a guided tour of the city’s most famous estate, Peterhof, and its exquisite gardens. [B,D]
Day 7 St Petersburg
This morning we take a tour of the city, including the Peter and Paul fortress. We then drive along Nevskyprospekt, the city’s main boulevard, to Palace Square which is dominated by the Winter Palace, home to the world-class Hermitage Museum. This museum’s collection is unrivalled anywhere in the world and is spread over three buildings. Here you can enjoy free time to view some of the 3 million pieces of art on display. [B,L]
Day 8 St Petersburg
Today you have the whole day at leisure to explore the amazing city of St Petersburg. [B]
Day 9 St Petersburg - Tallinn
Today we farewell Russia as we cross the border into neighbouring Estonia, one of the three Baltic states that gained independence in the early 1990s. [B]
Day 10 Tallinn
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The city is steeped in history and has retained most of its historic charm which can be observed in the narrow cobblestoned streets and Gothic town hall square. The afternoon is at leisure to browse the shops or mingle with the locals in one of the many cafes. [B]
Day 11 Tallinn - Riga
Today our journey continues through the green Estonian countryside to the Latvian capital, Riga. [B]
Day 12 Riga
Riga's historical centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the city is particularly notable for its extensive German Art Nouveau architecture, which UNESCO considers to be unparalleled. Our morning tour of Riga includes St Peter’s Church, the town square, the Dome Cathedral and the famed Freedom Monument. The afternoon is at leisure. [B]
Day 13 Riga - Vilnius
Today we travel on to Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, the most vibrant of the Baltic states. Along the way we visit the sacred pilgrimage site of the Hill of Crosses. Over the centuries, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 50,000. [B]
Day 14 Vilnius
A day of history as we tour the World Heritage-listed capital of Lithuania. Highlights include the Peter and Paul Cathedral and the historic university. The afternoon is at leisure. [B]
Day 15 Vilnius - Warsaw
We bid farewell to the former Soviet Union as we cross the border into Poland, a country at the geographic heart of Europe. Poland has a long and tumultuous history which has been shaped by its powerful neighbouring countries. [B]
Day 16 Warsaw
Our morning tour of Warsaw, Poland’s capital, includes a drive along the Royal Route and a visit to the Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto. We then take a stroll through the old town with its historic town square and interesting architecture. [B]
Day 17 Warsaw - Krakow
We travel on to historic Krakow, whose beauty is rivalled only by Prague. En route we travel to Auschwitz concentration camp which stands as a poignant reminder of the horrors of WWII. [B]
Day 18 Krakow
This morning we travel to the fascinating heritage-listed, 13th century, Wieliczka Salt Mine. In the afternoon we tour Krakow which is centred around its colourful town square. Krakow was the royal capital for 500 years, and as such the city was able to absorb much history and talent and is today a treasure trove of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Miraculously, this city emerged largely intact after WWII, and as a result no other city in Poland can boast so many historic buildings and monuments. [B]
Day 19 Krakow - Prague
We cross into the Czech Republic and on to Prague whose wonderfully preserved old town is considered to be the most beautiful in all of Europe. [B]
Day 20 Prague
A wonderful day as we tour Prague, including Prague Castle. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through to Gothic modifications from the 14th century. We also tour the old town square and the Jewish Quarter. This evening we enjoy a group farewell dinner. [B,D]
Day 21 Depart Prague
This morning is at leisure before we transfer to the airport to begin our journey home. [B]
