The Big 5 and the endangered species of Africa

- Visit The Golden Gate Highlands National Park with its massive, colourful sandstone formations. These shine goldenyellow in the evening sun and give the area its name. This remarkable nature reserve consists mainly of indigenous grassland and is home to a variety of wildlife and birdlife including the rare bearded vulture and the bald ibis. The numerous caves in the sandstone rocks were once shelters for the Bushmen with many of their cave paintings well preserved. It was also here that many Afrikaans families hid from the British during the Anglo-Boer War.
