South Africa in Depth Itinerary

Day 1  Arrive Johannesburg
Welcome to South Africa! On our arrival in Johannesburg we will be met and transferred to our hotel.

Day 2  Johannesburg – Kruger National Park
Today we fly to Kruger National Park, the largest game park in Africa. Here we will depart on a game drive in open safari vehicles. Kruger has more mammals than any other African game park and here you can see the ’Big 5’; lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros, plus other magnificent wild species. [B,D]

Day 3  Kruger National Park
Today is all about animals as we explore the wonders of the Kruger National Park in open 4x4 vehicles. Here you can enjoy the experience of seeing the animals roaming free in their natural habitat on a full-day game drive. [B,D]

Day 4  Kruger – Kwa Madwala Game Reserve
This morning we travel to the Kwa Madwala Private Game Reserve. Meaning "place of the rock" in the local Swazi tongue, Kwa Madwala is a 4,000-hectare private game reserve located on the south side of Kruger National Park.  [B,L,D]

Day 5  Kwa Madwala - Swaziland
On to Swaziland, stopping at the Ngwenya Glass Factory where you can observe talented Swazi glass blowers create their art from 100% recycled glass. We also visit the colourful craft market and the Matenga Village. [B,D]

Day 6  Swaziland - Hluhluwe
We continue into the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. This afternoon we enjoy a game drive in the reserve, which is home to more than 450 species of birds as well as wildebeest, white rhinoceros and antelope plus the occasional leopard, wild dog and hyena. [B,D]

Day 7  Hluhluwe - St Lucia
Today we leave Hluhluwe behind as we continue to the relaxed coastal town of 
St Lucia. [B]

Day 8  St Lucia
Our journey today takes us to the World-Heritage listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The park was previously known as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, but was renamed in 2007. The word 'iSimangaliso' is Zulu for 'a marvel.’ Here we take a relaxing boat ride - the best way to appreciate the spectacular scenery! [B]

Day 9  St Lucia - Shakaland
Today we visit the cultural village of Simunye in Shakaland. Here we learn more about the Zulu people’s fascinating culture and traditions which have developed over centuries and still play a vital role in today's society, whether rural or urban. [B,D]

Day 10  Shakaland - Drakensberg
Today we go through the Valley of 1,000 Hills to the historic Giant’s Castle in Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, home of the eland and the bearded vulture. [B]

Day 11  Drakensberg
Enjoy a full day at leisure in Drakensberg to relax, unwind and explore on your own. [B]

Day 12  Drakensberg - Lady Brand
A very scenic day as we travel through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park with its stunning sandstone cliffs and array of wildlife including black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, springbok and zebra. We then go on to Lady Brand. [B,D]

Day 13  Lady Brand - Graaff Reinet
Onwards today to Graaff Reinet, for a tour of the Valley of Desolation. Formed over millions of years by erosion, the sheer cliffs and columns of dolerite rising from the valley are stunninjg, and breathtaking. You will also see an array of obscure and unusual rock formations as well as a diverse range of flora and fauna.  [B,D]

Day 14  Graaff Reinet - Knysna
This morning we visit the Tsitsikamma National Park. The word tsitsikamma is a Khoisan phrase meaning ‘place of abundant water.’ We then continue on to the coast where we start our journey along the famous Garden Route to Knysna. [B,D]

Day 15  Plettenberg Bay
Enjoy a day at leisure to relax and explore the picturesque Plettenberg Bay. [B]

Day 16  Knynsa - Oudtshoorn
Today we go on to Oudtshoorn to visit the famous Cango Caves. A major tourist attraction, the caves were first discovered 200 years ago and are situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well-known Swartberg Mountains. Here you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with vast halls and towering formations. [B,D]

Day 17  Oudtshoorn - Stellenbosch
Our journey takes us on the scenic Route 62 towards Cape Town, stopping at  Stellenbosch. Located in the winelands, Stellenbosch is one of South Africa’s major wine producing areas and is comparable to the Barossa Valley. [B]

Day 18  Stellenbosch - Cape Town
Today we take a leisurely stroll down Dorp Street. Previously the main street of the town, it has many historic houses and colonial buildings from the early Dutch settler days, some still with elaborate Cape Dutch gables. We then head on to Cape Town where we will take a fantastic cable car ride up Table Mountain. The views from the top cannot be missed.  [B]

Day 19  Cape Town
An incredible day as we tour the rugged Cape Peninsula, including a boat cruise to Duiker Island and a visit to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where there is a chance to see the jackass penguins at Boulders Beach. [B,D]

Day 20  Cape Town
We enjoy a morning city tour of Cape Town including South Africa’s oldest building, the Castle of Good Hope, and the Company Gardens. This afternoon is at leisure to relax, explore further or enjoy the famed waterfront area. [B]

Day 21  Depart Cape Town
Enjoy a final morning at leisure before we bid farewell to South Africa to begin our journey home to Australia. [B]
