Take part in a Khmer cooking class with a local family. Cruise Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake – Tonlé Sap, and explore the vibrant floating villages. Tour Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. Visit the poignant killing fields, a stark reminder of the Pol Pot regime, and Tuol Sleng, the notorious Security Prison 21.

Charismatic Laos

Travel to Laos, where you’ll discover the charming colonial capital of Vientiane. Continue the journey north through the scenic countryside to Vang Vieng, visit the Nam Ngum Reservoir and Dam and a Hmong village. Make your way to quaint Luang Prabang and explore the city by tuk tuk, then join the locals for a game of petanque. Venture to the cascading Kuang Si waterfalls to swim in the crystal-clear waters and cruise along the Mekong enjoying typical Laotian cuisine as the sun sets.

Day 1. Depart Australia

Day 2. Arrive Siem Reap

Welcome to Siem Reap in Cambodia, gateway to the incredible temples of Angkor. Tonight we’ll travel by remork to dinner at a local restaurant serving typical Khmer dishes. [D]

Day 3. Angkor Excursion

Our day is spent in Angkor, visiting the ancient fortified city of Angkor Thom and the Terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King. We’ll also see the temple of Ta Keo, the amazing ruins of Ta Prohm, the temple of Preah Khan and the Buddhist temples of Banteay Kdei and Banteay Srei, considered the jewels of Khmer art. [B,D]

Day 4. Siem Reap

Special Experience: Take part in a Khmer cooking class with a local family and learn about their food customs and beliefs. We’ll savour our creations at lunch, overlooking a lily pond.

We’ll then cruise Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in southeast Asia. We’ll observe life and see the colourful floating villages. [B,L]

Day 5. Siem Reap - Phnom Penh

Special Experience: An early start to witness breathtaking views, shadows and reflections of Angkor Wat at sunrise.

After breakfast we’ll return to the site and have time to explore the ruins before our flight to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. This beautiful city was once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’. Despite being tarnished by war, the city still boasts great charm by way of its traditional architecture and the glistening spires of its palaces and temples. As well, its history is simply captivating. [B]

Day 6. Phnom Penh

Today we visit the poignant Killing Fields, a stark reminder of the Pol Pot regime, and the notorious Security Prison 21, Tuol Sleng. The former prison has been turned into a moving museum which stands as a testament to the crimes committed by Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge. This afternoon we’ll explore the bustling city by cyclo. Highlights include the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum and cruising along the riverside. Tonight we’ll enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. [B,D]

Day 7. Phnom Penh - Vientiane

Enjoy the morning at leisure before our flight to Laos’ charming French colonial capital, Vientiane, characterised by its wide, tree-lined boulevards and glimmering golden temples and monuments. [B]

Day 8. Vientiane

Today we’ll explore the city. Highlights of our tour include the golden stupa of Pha That Luang and the Patuxai Arch, inspired by Paris’ Arc de Triomphe. We’ll also see Wat Sisaket and Wat Phra Kaew. [B]

Day 9. Vientiane - Vang Vieng

We take a scenic drive north to Nam Ngum Reservoir and Dam, an area known for its tranquility and traditional way of life. We’ll enjoy a lake cruise and visit Ban Keun village and its traditional salt factory before we continue to Vang Vieng. [B]

Day 10. Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang

Along the way to Luang Prabang we’ll stop at a cable bridge and walk across the river to visit the Hmong village of Ban Phan Thao. We’ll pass through farmlands, the rice paddies of Ban Nadoa village and the small Tam Chang cave. [B]

Day 11. Luang Prabang

We board a tuk tuk to explore Luang Prabang this morning. We’ll visit the open-air market in the old town and stop to participate in the Big Brother Mouse program, helping young locals practice their English conversation. Later we’ll discover the traditional architecture of Luang Prabang at beautiful Wat Xieng Thong. We’ll also visit the local handicraft village of Ban Xang Khong and then make our way to the top of Mt Phu Si for magnificent views over the town and the Mekong River. [B,D]

Special Experience: This evening we join the locals to experience the tastes and traditions of Laos during a game of pétanque and a typical Laotian dinner. 

Day 12. Luang Prabang

Special Experience: Learn about rice harvesting, the tools that are used and meet the local farming guide this morning at Living Lands Organic Farm. We’ll then enjoy a tasting of some typical food made from the rice.

Day 13. Luang Prabang

This afternoon we’ll explore the beautiful Kuang Si waterfalls and visit ‘Free the Bears’, a rescue centre for Asiatic Black Bears. Tonight we’ll enjoy a group farewell dinner on a Mekong sunset cruise. [B,D]

Day 14. Depart Luang Prabang

Today we begin our journey home. [B]

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
At Bunnik Tours our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.
Bunnik Tours are for independently minded travellers with good levels of mobility.

Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation

In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa
2. Extended periods at high altitude (3,000-4,000 metres) in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Ethiopia
3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico and Costa Rica
4. Limited medical facilities in remote areas

Bunnik Tours travellers are required to at least:
1. Be able to walk 2-3 hours on uneven surfaces
2. Walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills
3. Stand for 20 minutes without needing to sit down, often in hot/humid climates
4. Carry their own luggage
5. Get on and off various modes of transport without assistance, including small boats

Laos

 

Royal Ballet Theatre – 6:00pm, 1hr – US $30 pp (Seat in Coach)

60 artists of the Royal Ballet troupe performed Phra-Lak Phra-Lam, the Lao version of the sacred poem, the Ramayana. This show takes place in the garden of the National Museum, formerly the Royal palace. Includes transfers.

 

Mandalao Elephant Experience / No Riding – 8:30am, 5hrs – US $99pp (Seat in Coach – Max 6)

Get an in-depth introduction into elephant behaviour and communication. Meet the elephants and cross river for first introduction. Watch the elephants as they bathe then begin a trek with the elephants past beautiful Lao gardens before exploring the jungle covered Huay Nok stream. Say goodbyes after final treats for the elephants as they begin the trek back to MandaLao. Enjoy traditional Lao cusine for lunch from own organic produce. Return to your hotel by 1:30pm. Includes return transfers and lunch.

Please Note: Dress appropriately - you may get wet with the elephants.

 

Ock Pop Tok / Natural Dyes – 8:30am, 3hrs 30mins – US $53pp (Seat in Coach)

Ock Pop Tok (East meets West) is set in a tropical Mekong garden in Luang Prabang and opens its doors to learning about Lao textiles and crafts. Bringing alive our concept of east meets west, the LCC is a place where you can meet silk weavers, craft artisans and silkworms while learning about textiles in class. Includes return transfers.

 

Yoga Class – 7:30am or 5:30pm, 1hr – US $25pp (Seat in Coach)

Luang Prabang Yoga is a cooperative of independent yoga teachers who offer yoga in Luang Prabang at spiritual locations. Together with the students who live or have travelled here, we’re a unique yoga community that believes in the connection between nature and yoga. Includes return transfers.

Traditional Massage – Flexible time (when time permits) – 1hr – US $15pp

After a long flight or a couple of days on a bumpy road you should really try a local massage. During a traditional Lao massage, the masseuse rests on the body’s pressure points with rhythmic repetition, using their body weight to add force. The set routine starts with some foot reflexology and moves its way up to your head. Includes return transfers.

Reil

The official currency of Cambodia is the Reil (KHR; symbol ៛).

  • 1 Reil = 10 Kak
  • Notes are in denominations of ៛50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100000
  • Coins are in denominations of ៛50, 100, 200 and 500

Please Note: USD is preferred in Cambodia but you may also wish to carry small denominations of Reil (Reil is not allowed to enter or leave the country). Ensure you request your change in the currency you made the purchase with.

Lao Kip

The official currency of Laos is the Lao Kip (LAK; ₭).

  • 1 Lao Kip = 100 Att.
  • Notes are in denominations of ₭100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000, 1,000 and 500.
  • Coins are in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 att.

Please note: There are no international ATM facilities in Laos. Major credit cards are accepted at some international hotels and tourist orientated establishments. Most transactions are conducted in cash – American Dollars, Thai Baht or Lao Kip.
