Immerse yourself in the beauty and traditions of the Far East on this in-depth journey through modern and ancient China. Explore the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, visit the iconic Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors and giant pandas, and cruise the beautiful Li & Yangtze Rivers.

Forbidden City

Our tour starts in the bustling city of Beijing, where we'll visit the Forbidden City, sample home-made dumplings and walk on the marvel that is the Great Wall of China. There is plenty of time for photos, so make sure your camera is fully charged!

From Ancient Dynasties to Giant Pandas

Another fantastic highlight of this China tour is a visit to the magnificent Terracotta Warriors and Horses, which are considered to be one of the greatest archaeological finds of the last century. We then enjoy an exciting day at the Chengdu Panda Base visiting the Giant Pandas, one of the world's rarest animals. Simply beautiful! Next we board our cruise ship and cruise on one of the world's greatest waterways - the Yangtze River, for 3 nights. We enjoy shore trips including a visit to Shibaozhai, a 12-storey pavilion built during the Ming dynasty.

Bustling Metropolises

Our China adventure ends in Shanghai, the New York of the Orient. Here we enjoy a day-trip to the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao, then back in Shanghai we take a stroll along the Bund, explore the famous Nanjing Road, and visit the beautiful Yu Garden and lively Yuyuan market.

Itinerary

Day 1. Depart Australia - Arrive Beijing

Ni hao! Welcome to China and the bustling capital city of Beijing.

Day 2. Beijing

Special Experience: Ride through Beijing’s hutongs (narrow streets and alleys) by rickshaw to explore a different side of the city. We’ll then visit a local home to try some homemade dumplings.

After lunch we’ll visit the beautiful Summer Palace and take a dragonboat cruise on Kunming Lake. Tonight we enjoy an authentic Peking Duck banquet for our welcome dinner. [B,L,D]

Day 3. Beijing

A must-do for every visitor to China, today we’ll walk a small section of the Great Wall. Built more than 2,000 years ago, and spanning some 6,700 kilometres, the Great Wall is perhaps China’s most iconic attraction. We also visit Sacred Road; lined with huge stone statues, it was originally built to lead the way to the Changling Mausoleum. [B,L]

Day 4. Beijing

Today we visit Tiananmen Square and explore the Forbidden City. We’ll also discover the beautiful Temple of Heaven, where emperors performed rituals to ensure a good harvest in ancient times. [B,L]

Day 5. Beijing - Xi’an

We travel to Xi’an by fast train. We’ll take a city tour this afternoon. Highlights include the well-preserved city walls and the Bell Tower. [B]

Day 6. Xi’an

We see the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and Horses this morning. This afternoon we’ll explore the Muslim Market, passing through its narrow bazaar street filled with local delicacies, snacks and souvenirs. This was the starting point of the famous Silk Road more than 1,000 years ago. [B,L]

Day 7. Xi’an - Guilin

This morning we fly to beautiful Guilin, its name meaning ‘Forest of Sweet Osmanthus’ due to the many osmanthus trees that line the streets of the city. This afternoon we’ll visit the Reed Flute Cave and explore scenic Fubo Hill. [B,L]

Day 8. Guilin - Yangshuo

A relaxing day cruising the Li River to Yangshuo. Enjoy the stunning views of the dramatic karst mountain landscape and watch colourful village life as we pass by. [B,L]

Day 9. Yangshuo

Special Experience: We’ll take a cooking class this morning and learn some traditional techniques and recipes.

The rest of the afternoon is at leisure for you to take in this beautiful setting at your own pace. Why not take a stroll down the famous West Street for dinner? [B,L]

Day 10. Yangshuo - Chengdu

Today we fly to Chengdu, home of the giant pandas. Enjoy an afternoon cup of traditional Chinese tea at Wenshu Temple - Chengdu’s oldest and largest Buddhist temple. Then we’ll soak up the atmosphere of Jinli Old Street. [B,D]

Day 11. Chengdu - Chongqing - Yangtze River Cruise

Special Experience: We get up close with the endangered giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Later we take an express train to Chongqing to board our three-night Yangtze River cruise. [B,L]

Day 12. Yangtze River Cruise

Enjoy the stunning scenery as we cruise along the Yangtze. This afternoon we’ll take a shore excursion to Shibaozhai, the ‘Precious Stone Fortress’, built during the Ming Dynasty. [B,L,D]

Day 13. Yangtze River Cruise

Spend the morning relaxing on board and admiring the view before an afternoon shore excursion to Shenny Stream, a smaller tributary of the Yangtze. [B,L,D]

Day 14. Yangtze River Cruise - Shanghai

We visit the Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, before disembarking in Yichang. Later this afternoon we’ll fly to the sprawling metropolis of Shanghai. [B,L]

Day 15. Shanghai

We spend a day touring the magnificent city of Shanghai. Highlights include a visit to Shanghai Museum, a stroll along the Bund and the famous Nanjing Road. We’ll continue to the beautiful Yu Garden and see the lively Yuyuan Market. Tonight we’ll enjoy an incredible acrobatics show at the Shanghai Centre Theatre. [B,L]

Day 16. Shanghai

Special Experience: We explore Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town dating back some 700 years. Complete with traditional old bridges and small rivers, it’s set against a stunning backdrop of lakes and mountains.

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
At Bunnik Tours our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.
Bunnik Tours are for independently minded travellers with good levels of mobility.

Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation

In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa
2. Extended periods at high altitude (3,000-4,000 metres) in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Ethiopia
3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico and Costa Rica
4. Limited medical facilities in remote areas

Bunnik Tours travellers are required to at least:
1. Be able to walk 2-3 hours on uneven surfaces
2. Walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills
3. Stand for 20 minutes without needing to sit down, often in hot/humid climates
4. Carry their own luggage
5. Get on and off various modes of transport without assistance, including small boats

Jianguo Garden Hotel Beijing is ideally located in the city centre and is just a 10 minute walk from Wangfujing Shopping St and a 20 minute walk from the Forbidden City & Tiananmen Square. The Guilin Bravo Hotel is located in the city centre and is surrounded by some of the most popular shopping areas, including the night market which is only a 10 minute walk away. Each of the hotels 329 guest rooms have controlled air-conditioning and heating, safety deposit boxes, colour television with free in-house movies and satellite channels, free Internet access and mini bar. All rooms are non-smoking.

A legendary age in China. The stage epic tells how a queen who wears a golden mask creates a splendid dynasty through wisdom, tolerance, trust and boundless love. In eight acts, it tells stories of war and bountiful pastures.

Tang Dynasty Show with Jiaozi Dinner – 2hrs 10min  - RMB 358pp
The Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) was one of the most glorious dynasties in China's history, Xi'an was the capital during the Tang Dynasty and called as Chang'an. Tang Dynasty Show is a performance of Chang'an music and dances in Tang Dynasty style laid out according to various historical records and ancient arts and relics discovered in Xi'an, during the show, the musicians present the music with the Tang-Dynasty-style musical instruments and the dancers dance by wearing a Tang-Dynasty-style robe with long white silk sleeves, you will certainly enjoy this national art that reflects the glory and richness of the Tang Dynasty era.

Impression Liu Sanjie (Yangshuo) – 70min - RMB 320pp (B2 Middle Class Seat)
China's largest outdoor performance in Yangshuo county with Li River as a natural stage and mountains as background, directed by the distinguished director Zhang Yimou, during the show, you will see hundreds of bamboo rafts float on the liquid water, candle lights sparkle with the moon and stars, thousands of people dressed in Chinese minority ethnic costumes hum a folk song, you will certainly have a fantastic experience that you can't forget all your life!

Shu Feng Ya Yun (Sichuan Opera) – 100min - RMB 260pp (Row 1-4) 
Sichuan Opera is rated as the must-experience after dark in Chengdu and the most popular one is Shu Feng Ya Yun . It is an old building giving a feeling of ancient China. The show consists of a few short sketches of different genres to give audience an idea of what the opera is. They are hand shadowing, face mask changing and even a comedy show. With English subtitles displayed of both sides of the stages, foreigners can still understand the show. Fire and puppet shows are also included.

Evening Huangpu River Cruise – 50min  - RMB 250pp
Witness both old and new Shanghai, as you sail up and down the river with sweeping views of The Bund and the 21st century cityscape of Pudong. The view along both banks of the river is amazing at night with the Shanghai skyline lit up.

Shanghai was a surprise, I found it electric and architecturally a treat. The Yangtze River was stunning. The obligatory tourist destinations in Beijing were brilliant. the Terracotta warriors in Xi'an were incredible. The Li River Cruise was breathtaking. Deborah Macarthur - October 2012
