Stone Forests and Markets

Our tour begins in Kunming, one of China's most liveable cities. We'll visit the Stone Forest, a vast area of spectacular and intricate limestone formations representative of Southern China's karst landscape before heading to the Jingxing Bird and Flower Market for a unique glimpse into daily life of the locals.

From Ancient Towns to National Forests

Next we'll explore Lijiang Ancient Town and the picturesque Lashihai wetland area. We'll gaze out over Tiger Leaping Gorge - one of the most scenic and spectacular river canyons in the world, situatuated on the Jinsha River. Next it's on to Shangri-La followed by the breathtaking Zhangjiajie National Forest, which provided inspiration for James Cameron's epic blockbuster Avatar. We'll enjoy a full-day tour of the incredible UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wulinyuan Scenic Area.

Vibrant Hong Kong

The final stop is Hong Kong, perhaps best known as one of the world's primary financial, shopping, culinary and cultural hubs. There's plenty of leisure time to explore this vibrant and densely populated urban centre before a farewell cruise over-looking Hong Kong's incredible skyline from Victoria Harbour.

Itinerary

Day 1. Depart Australia

Day 2. Arrive Kunming

Ni hao! Welcome to one of China’s most liveable cities, Kunming. Tonight we’ll enjoy a group welcome dinner. [D]

Day 3. Kunming

Enjoy a slower start to the day with breakfast and some time at leisure. Our first stop later this morning is the Stone Forest, a vast area of spectacular and intricate limestone formations representative of Southern China’s karst landscape. After lunch in a local restaurant we’ll visit the Jingxing Bird and Flower Market, offering a unique glimpse into the daily life of the locals. [B,L]

Day 4. Kunming - Dali

This morning we’ll take a bullet train to Dali, known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning aesthetics. We’ll start our sightseeing in Xizhou Bai, an ethnic minority village full of beautifully preserved ancient architecture. Later we’ll step back in time to visit Dali Ancient Town, where the local Bai population have helped shape its distinctive look and feel. [B,L]

Special Experience: Visit the Three Pagodas of the Chongshen Monastery at the base of Cang Mountain, dating all the way back to the 9th century.

Day 5. Dali - Lijiang

Today we depart for Lijiang, stopping on the way to visit Shaxi Ancient Town, once a stop on the Southern Silk Road. [B,L]

Special Experience: Discover Lijiang Ancient Town, which is embraced by the beautiful Lion Mountain in the east, Elephant and Golden Row mountains in the North and vast fertile fields in the Southeast.

Day 6. Lijiang

We head out to explore the picturesque Lashihai wetland area. We’ll travel across Lashi Lake and stop at the famous Zhiyun Temple - the first of Lijiang’s five famous lamasery temples. Later we’ll visit Yufeng Temple and meet with some of the minority groups living in the Lashihai Lake area, and also visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shuhe Ancient Town. [B,L]

Day 7. Lijiang - Shangri-La

Special Experience: Gaze out over Tiger Leaping Gorge - one of the most scenic and spectacular river canyons in the world, situated on the Jinsha River, a primary tributary of the upper Yangtze Ruver.

This afternoon arrive in Shangri-La City, the capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. We’ll also visit the Yi Village - the Yi are an ethnic minority. [B,L]

Day 8. Shangri-La

We start the day exploring the Pudacuo National Park and one of its two lakes, Shudu Lake. Pudacao National Park is notably home to the vulnerable black-necked cranes, many rare and beautiful orchids, and a Himalayan Yew, extracts of which are a source of an anti-cancer drug. Later we’ll visit the Gedan Songzanlin Monastery, established during the Ming Dynasty. [B,L]

Day 9. Shangri-La - Kunming - Zhangjiajie

Enjoy a relaxed morning at leisure until our flight to Zhangjiajie, where we’ll have a free afternoon to explore at our own pace before our group dinner this evening. [B,D]

Day 10. Zhangjiajie

Special Experience: Discover the breathtaking Zhangjiajie National Forest, which provided inspiration for James Cameron's epic blockbuster Avatar, on a full-day tour of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wulinyuan Scenic Area. [B,L]

Day 11. Zhangjiajie - Changsha

Today we test our mettle on Tianmen Mountain’s formidable Glass Skywalk. Situated some 1,400 metres up the mountain, we’ll need to take the cable car to experience this feat of modern engineering. Tianmen Mountain, also known ‘Heavenly Gate Mountain’, offers spectacular views of the areas natural beauty. With our feet firmly back on solid ground, we continue our journey on to Changsha. [B,L]

Day 12. Changsha - Hong Kong

We fly to Hong Kong this morning, where we’ll enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Hong Kong has many titles, but it is perhaps best known as one of the world’s primary financial, shopping, culinary and cultural hubs. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to explore this vibrant and densely populated urban centre. [B]

Day 13. Hong Kong

Explore Hong Kong with a morning tour that includes the relaxed and resort-like Repulse Bay, Aberdeen and Victoria Peak. The afternoon is free for you to shop, explore or simply relax ahead of tonight’s group farewell dinner cruise in Victoria Harbour. [B,D]

Day 14. Depart Hong Kong

Today we begin our journey home. [B]

  • Explore the Lashihai wetland nature reserve, a paradise for over 57 species of birds and a biodiversity which has been effectively preserved. Enjoy a cruise on Lashi Lake.
  • Visit Shuhe Ancient Town where we will meet a Naxi minority group family.
  • Visit Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world. Legend has it that tigers would leap to the other side by a huge rock lying in the middle of the river at the entrance of the gorge.
  • Travel to Zhongdian with its snowy mountains, vast grasslands, plateau lakes and exotic Tibetan customs. Recently the area was named Shangri-la meaning "the sun and the moon in the heart" in Tibetan language.
  • Stop in at the Yi minority village, a large minority group of farmers and herders who speak a Tibetan-Burman language.
  • Visit picturesque Pudacuo National Park including Shudu Lakes and the Gedan Songzanlin Monastery.
  • Experience the famous hospitality of the Tibetan people and meet a local family in their home.
  • Enjoy a full day in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area including Zhangjiajie National Forest and Tianzi Mountain - internationally renown since the release of the 2009 movie Avatar. Take the cable car up Tianzi Mountain, ride the famous Bailong Elevator, see the first bridge under the sun and the Ten-mile gallery.
  • Take the cable car from the city centre to the summit of Tianmen Mountain and take a walk on the glass walkway 1,430 metres high and sometimes giving the sensation of walking on clouds.

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
At Bunnik Tours our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.
Bunnik Tours are for independently minded travellers with good levels of mobility.

Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation

In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa
2. Extended periods at high altitude (3,000-4,000 metres) in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Ethiopia
3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico and Costa Rica
4. Limited medical facilities in remote areas

Bunnik Tours travellers are required to at least:
1. Be able to walk 2-3 hours on uneven surfaces
2. Walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills
3. Stand for 20 minutes without needing to sit down, often in hot/humid climates
4. Carry their own luggage
5. Get on and off various modes of transport without assistance, including small boats
