Day 1. Depart Australia

Day 2. Arrive Bologna 

Welcome to Italy and the beautiful capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, the medieval city of Bologna! Meet your fellow travellers and Tour Director for a welcome drink this evening.

Day 3. Bologna 

This morning we explore lively Bologna. Highlights include the sprawling Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica di San Petronio, Neptune Fountain and Two Towers. [B,D]

Special Experience: We’ll take a pasta-making class and enjoy our creations for our group welcome dinner this evening. 

Day 4. Parma & Modena Excursion

Special Experience: Visit the ‘Food Valley’ of Modena and Parma for a day tasting cheese, lambrusco, balsamic vinegar and prosciutto. 

Here we see parmigiano-reggiano being made at a cheese factory and enjoy a cheese tasting with lambrusco. Our next stop is the Acetaia, where we sample a family’s traditional balsamic vinegar, made with an ancient recipe. We then see the prosciutto-making process, before enjoying a sample along with another glass of lambrusco. [B]

Day 5. Bologna - San Marino - Urbino

This morning we depart for the Marche region, making a stop at the petite country of San Marino. We cross the border here and see the many amazing castles and villages perched atop clifftops. After enjoying some free time, we then continue to the idyllic Italian town of Urbino, where we enjoy a city tour of the highlights including the Ducal Palace, Church of San Domenico and the Dome. Day 6. Urbino - Ascoli Piceno

Today we will explore the Frasassi Caves, the longest in Italy. With a central chamber 240 metres high, it is large enough to comfortably fit the Milan cathedral! We then head to the Conero Riviera where we enjoy locally grown mussels for lunch at a local restaurant, complete with an incredible sea view. [B,L]

Day 7. Ascoli Piceno

We take to the footpaths of Ascoli Piceno today for a walking tour, discovering its historical riches and piazza. On our tour we also sample the typical Ascoli olives, which are fried and stuffed with delicious meat. [B]

Special Experience: We’ll visit a winery in Offida surrounded by breathtaking scenery and enjoy a wine tasting along with regional produce. 

Day 8. Ascoli Piceno - Locorotondo 

Today we depart for Apulia, stopping on our way to admire the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Castel del Monte, a historic octangular castle dating back to the 13th century. Next, we continue to Andria, and taste the local dish burrata, a delicious cheese stuffed with cream and mozzarella strips. [B,D]

Day 9. Locorotondo 

Altamura, one of Apulia’s most ancient cities, is our first stop today. Interestingly, a human fossil was found here, as well as more than 30,000 dinosaur imprints. Here we’ll take a walking tour of the town and try the famous local bread at a bakery. Our next stop is Matera and is among the longest continually inhabited settlements in the world. [B,D]

Day 10. Locorotondo 

Today we explore more of the Alberobello area and visit the towns of Ostuni, the famous white city, and Cisternino with its cute white chalk houses. Tonight, we enjoy dinner in a typical vucciria, complete with little butcheries. [B,D]

Day 11.  Locorotondo - Lecce

Countless intricate baroque buildings await us on our sightseeing tour in Lecce today. In the afternoon we continue to Otranto, a magical town overlooking the Adriatic Sea. [B,D]

Day 12. Lecce

After breakfast, we head to Gallipoli, an old fishing village by the Ionian Sea where we explore the heart of the town and its bustling fish markets. Our lunch will be at a local restaurant, with produce picked from the local fish market. [B,L]

Day 13. Lecce - Overnight Ferry

This morning we head north to Bari, stopping at the scenic seaside town of Polignano a Mare, known for its white pebbled beaches.

Special Experience: Enjoy lunch in a cave restaurant here as you take in the endless ocean views.

We’ll then continue to the port town of Bari for a highlights tour before embarking on our overnight ferry to Greece. [B,L]

Day 14. Igoumenitsa - Ioannina

Once we arrive in Greece, we’ll travel to the nearby town of Ioannina. We’ll enjoy a walking tour of the city and its castle. A beautiful islet sits in the middle of Lake Pamvotida and we’ll take a boat out to explore it. [B]

Day 15. Ioannina

We spend the day enjoying the natural scenery of the stunning Zagori region. We’ll explore some of the 48 picturesque villages that make up this area. In Monodendri we’ll visit the monastery for incredible views of Vikos Gorge. [B]

Day 16. Ioannina - Kalambaka

Today we travel to Kalambaka. Along the way we’ll stop in Metsovo, a stunning village perched high on the side of a mountain. [B]

Day 17. Meteora Excursion

Special Experience: This morning we visit the amazing clifftop monasteries of Meteora. Monks have lived atop these ‘columns of the sky’ since the 11th century. From early Christian times, Meteora’s cliffs have been regarded as the perfect place to attain absolute isolation in order to achieve peace and harmony. The tallest of these incredible rock formations reaches 400 metres high. [B]

Day 18. Kalambaka - Delphi - Athens

On our way to Athens we visit Delphi, considered by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world. We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the archaeological ruins including the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Treasury of Athenians and visit the museum, home to the famous 'bronze charioteer'. [B]

Day 19. Athens

Athens on a panoramic city tour. Highlights include the ancient Acropolis, the magnificent Parthenon, the Greek parliament and the Panathinaikon marble stadium, where the first modern Olympics took place. We’ll also wander through the lively Thisio, Monastiraki and Plaka districts to get a taste of the local atmosphere. [B]

Day 20. Athens

Special Experience: Spend an incredible day cruising the Saronic Gulf and exploring the islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra. [B,L]

Day 21. Athens

Today we visit the famous Corinth Canal, separating the Peloponnese from mainland Greece. We’ll also admire the best-preserved theatre of Ancient Greece, the Sanctuary of Asklepio in Epidaurus. Enjoy some free time in the delightful seaside town of Nafplio before we return to Athens. [B,D]

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
At Bunnik Tours our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.
Bunnik Tours are for independently minded travellers with good levels of mobility.

Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation

In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa
2. Extended periods at high altitude (3,000-4,000 metres) in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Ethiopia
3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda
4. Limited medical facilities in remote areas

Bunnik Tours travellers are required to at least:
1. Be able to walk 2-3 hours on uneven surfaces
2. Walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills
3. Stand for 20 minutes without needing to sit down, often in hot/humid climates
4. Carry their own luggage
5. Get on and off various modes of transport without assistance, including small boats

Zanhotel Tre Vecchi is a 4-star hotel in the centre of Bologna, an ideal location from which to explore the old city. In fact, the hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Maggiore. Visiting the centre of Bologna on foot from the hotel is easy.

Grand Serai Congress Center & Spa, Ioannina
