Monumental America

Learn more about America's capital, Washington, DC, as you tour the city's major sights, such as the White House, Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall. Stop to visit George Washington's home en route to Williamsburg where you'll step back through time with a tour of Colonial Williamsburg - considered the world's largest living museum. Stroll through an in-tact town of around 100 preserved 19th-century homes that played a pivotal role in the Civil War in Harper's Ferry, before learning more the Civil War on a guided tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield with a Civil War Historian.

The Big Apple

New York, New York! Get to know New York City's rich history and vibrant culture through its kitchens as you eat your way through Little Italy on a walking food tour. See what all the fuss is about as you discover some of the city's most iconic sites, such as the Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue, Central Park and Times Square.

To the Freedom Trail

Moving on from New York we'll envy the opulent 'Summer cottages' of Millionaire's Row, explore the eclectic and flamboyant artisan colony of Provincetown, see the Gingerbread house of Martha's Vineyard's and visit Plymouth Rock before stopping at key spots along the Boston Freedom Trail.

Day 1. Arrive Washington, DC

Welcome to the United States of America, and its capital—Washington, DC. Home to some of the country’s most iconic monuments and buildings, including, of course, the White House, this is a city full of rich history just waiting to be explored. Enjoy a relaxing welcome drink at the hotel.

Day 2. Washington, DC

We set out for a tour of the major city sights this morning, visiting the Capitol Building, the White House, Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall and the Washington Monument. We’ll also visit the International Spy Museum to learn about the craft, history and contemporary art of espionage before our group welcome dinner this evening. [B,D]

Day 3. Washington, DC

Today is at leisure for you to explore Washington, DC at your own pace. Why not make some time to explore one of the Smithsonian's 11 museums and galleries on the National Mall? [B]

Day 4. Washington, DC - Williamsburg

On our way to Williamsburg today we’ll stop at the house of America’s first president and the capital’s namesake, George Washington, in Mount Vernon. We’ll also take a tour of Jamestown’s historical sights and learn more about Pocohontas at the Visitor Centre. [B]

Day 5. Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg is considered the world’s largest living museum, with over 40 sites and trades, two world-class museums and four historic taverns. After a short orientation, you’ll be able to see as much of Colonial Williamsburg as you can fit into the rest of the day at your own pace. [B]

Day 6. Williamsburg - Harpers Ferry

This morning we set out for Harpers Ferry, a quaint and historic community reminiscent of America’s past. Enjoy an evening at leisure to explore the town's picturesque streets. [B,L]

Day 7. Harpers Ferry - Lancaster

We’ll begin our day with a tour of the historic district in Harpers Ferry, which preserves around 100 historic buildings in what is essentially an intact 19th century town that played a pivotal role in the Civil War. [B]

Day 8. Lancaster

Lancaster, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, is famed for its large Amish population. This morning we’ll take a tour of Amish country and learn more about their culture, traditions and history. [B,L]

Day 9. Lancaster - New York

On our way to New York we’ll stop to see some of Philadelphia’s iconic sights, such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and other revolutionary monuments. [B,D]

Special Experience: Discover New York City’s Little Italy on a food tour down Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

Day 10. New York

The huge, sprawling metropolis of New York is America’s epicentre of arts, entertainment and dining, and undoubtedly has something to offer everyone. We’re going to see some of the city’s highlights today, such as the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre and Fifth Avenue. [B]

Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore this amazing city. [B]

Day 12. New York - Newport

Today we depart for Newport, Rhode Island, with a stop in Hartford for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the home of Mark Twain, the accomplished author behind works such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Roughing It and The Gilded Age. [B]

Day 13. Newport

Newport, home to breathtaking views and historic mansions. Our morning tour will see us cruising down Ocean Drive and Millionaire’s Row to see the opulent ‘summer cottages’ of the Gilded Age. We’ll even have the opportunity to tour a few of the mansions, including the Breakers, home of the Vanderbilt family. [B]

Day 14. Newport - Plymouth

After breakfast we’ll continue our drive along the Cape Cod national seashore, stopping at the ‘elbow’ to see Chatham Lighthouse. We’ll also spend some time in the coastal artisan colony of Provincetown, known for its eclectic and flamboyant culture, beautiful beaches and brilliant art galleries. [B]

Day 15. Plymouth

Special Experience: Board a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, an island south of Cape Cod. Take in the breathtaking scenery on a tour of the island, which will include the famous Gingerbread Houses in Oak Bluffs and stops along the African American Heritage Trail. [B]

Day 16. Plymouth - Boston

We’ll be transported back in time as we explore the Plimoth Plantation today, a living museum that replicates the original settlement of the Plymouth Colony. We’ll also visit
Plymouth Rock, the traditional site of disembarkation of the founders of the Plymouth Colony. [B]

Day 17. Boston

Our tour today takes us along the path of the historical Freedom Trail, visiting sites of historical significance in the American Revolution. The trail connects 16 sites including Boston Common, the Old Granary Burying Ground, Quincy Market and Old North Church, each telling its own story. Tonight we'll enjoy a group dinner to farewell our amazing tour. [B,D]

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
At Bunnik Tours our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.
Bunnik Tours are for independently minded travellers with good levels of mobility.
Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation
In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa
2. Extended periods at high altitude (3,000-4,000 metres) in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Ethiopia
3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda
4. Limited medical facilities in remote areas
Bunnik Tours travellers are required to at least:
1. Be able to walk 2-3 hours on uneven surfaces
2. Walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills
3. Stand for 20 minutes without needing to sit down, often in hot/humid climates
4. Carry their own luggage
5. Get on and off various modes of transport without assistance, including small boats
