The trek commences early in the morning, when we're picked up from our hotel and taken to the train station. We board the train to the 'Km 104' train station, the starting point of our trek. While this is one of the easier treks around the Cusco region, you will need a reasonable level of fitness to complete it.

The first site along the way is the incredible archaeological complex of Chachabamba. From here the trail ascends for 8km.

At approximately the 4 hour mark we arrive at the impressive ruins of Wiñay Wayna built into the steep countryside. As we continue, we'll enjoy magnificent views of the Urubamba River Valley and the Choquesuysuy archaeological complex.

We continue along a trail of flat stones on the edges of cliffs in highland jungle for another hour or so, until we arrive at the picturesque Sun Gate of Inti Punku - a wonderful photo opportunity.

The trek ends in the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and there really is no better way to tick off this unique bucket list item. Our guide will take us through this mind-blowing site, pointing out the most important parts of the ancient civilisation.

Let's Talk Fitness

Levels-of-Fitness-sml

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
Our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.

Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation

In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa

3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda

Optional Excursions

Peru

Machu Picchu 2nd visit & Huayna Picchu - half day - $110pp US
Your tour already includes one visit to Machu Picchu; however you may wish to take a second visit to explore this phenomenon further and incorporate a climb up to Huayna Picchu (considered to provide the best view over Machu Picchu). Please note this includes entry into Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and transportation only (guide not included).

Please note: Huayna Picchu has a limited number of tickets available each day, with two times available to visit - 7.00am and 10.00am. There is a restriction of only 200 visitors per time slot. These usually sell out well in advance and it is unlikely it will be possible to arrange entry upon arrival into Aguas Calientes. To avoid disappointment, we suggest you purchase your entrance ticket online in advance to secure entry. However, it is important to note that this option is non-refundable even if entry is cancelled due to bad weather. If possible, we recommend booking the earlier time slot, visiting Huayna Picchu first prior to touring the Inca site. The online option will only secure your ticket to Huayna Picchu and entrance to Machu Picchu; the return bus from Aguas Calientes will be in addition and will need to be arranged locally. http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe

Terrific small group dynamic, terrific guides, accommodation and food. Michael R - June 2019
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Simply Amazing 5
Small group touring with Bunnik is the way to go (we had 8 in our group). Our guide Carlos went out of his way to make our visit to South America so enjoyable. His guidance made it a very safe relaxed holiday. Our local guides were so passionate about their cities and countries and a wealth of information without over-load. We loved the way the tour was mixed with group activities and free time (although we tended to do things with our group during free time as we all got along so well). Our guide was always available to give advice for sightseeing during our free time. The accommodation was first class and always in the best locations, walking distance to restaurants, money exchange, laundry facilities and shopping. The scenery was breath taking and every corner you turned was another wow factor. People have asked what the highlight was but we can’t single out any one thing, they were all special for different reasons. South America with Bunnik is something you just have to experience. Glendon & Davina G - October 2018
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos A great trip 4
I loved the places, the history and the people I travelled with, and the wonderful guides. Our main guide, Ivonne, was excellent - friendly, personable, knowledgeable. She taught and showed us so much Patricia T - March 2018

Highlights of South America & the Galapagos The tango, the horses, Cuzco and the great guides! 5
One of the most memorable things about the trip was that we had the best guides of any trip that I've been on. (This is my first Bunnik trip.) Jesus was a wonderful guide. All the guides that joined us along the way were also wonderful, knowledgeable and nice people. I hear that Bunnik travels to South America and hand-picks each of the guides. So I just want to say thank you for all involved. Vieta Dyer - December 2014
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Loved the variety of cultures, history and landscapes. 5
Thank you for running the tour with a very small group. We loved the Amazon, Machu Picchu, Iquazu and Patagonia. Also seeing Condors in Colca Valley was amazing they were so very majestic and flew very close to us. Sandra Davis - February 2016
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Iguazu Falls and Machu Picchu 4
The splendour and wonder of Iguazu Falls was complemented by the Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas - fantastic. The spectacular Machu Picchu is beyond words and photos, it has to be seen to be believed. Deb Gustainis - October 2015

Iguazu Falls were the best! A great group of fellow travellers. Transportation was 1st Class and accommodation and sightseeing were both excellent. Luke Keighery - September 2015
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Awesome itinerary, awesome group, awesome tour leader! 5
Too many highlights to pick easily but the Galapagos Islands and Peru would be right up there. Rio was also amazing! All our guides were fantastic and as far as tour leaders go , the entire group felt so fortunate to have Pepe with us. He was exceptional! All transportation was great, and the accommodation was excellent. Sightseeing on tour was great, with a good balance between tours and free time. Amanda Circosta - July 2015
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos It ticked all the boxes, with no stress! 5

Fondest memories & highlights..the whole experience, I loved Argentina Brazil. We had a wonderful group caring and considerate. I loved Peru in particular the wonders of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, the colourful Inti Raymi all just unbelievably wonderful. What an asset our tour Escort Gina is to Bunnik. She has an excellent balance of efficiency, professionalism, fun, caring and the best people skills. I can't speak highly enough of her. Janet Ryan - June 2015

Highlights of South America & the Galapagos It felt like 6 holidays in one. 5
This was one of the best holidays I have been on (and there have been many!). It felt like 6 holidays in one because it was so diverse. The variety of the holiday and the interesting things we did were great. Seeing Machu Picchu for the first time from the terrace and swimming with the turtles in the Galapagos Islands were real highlights. Susan Brown - December 2014

Swimming with sea lions, watching blue footed boobies mate. Finally seeing Macchu Picchu. The Iguazu Falls which were beyond my imagination . The wonderful people on our tour and Veronica, who at all times was professional, but became our friend and holiday companion. Well done Bunniks. Elizabeth Macdonald - September 2014
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Excellent & we will travel with Bunnik again 5
Great to travel in small group of 12. Guide Veronica was brilliant - I got pneumonia in Cusco and the support from her and Bunnik was fantastic, the way they were there for me and also assisted my partner Kev. Everyone in the group agreed the trip and accommodation was top class. Definitely will travel with Bunnik again. Doreen Anderson - September 2014
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Trip of a lifetime! 5
This tour gave us a wonderful overview of South America. Everything ran smoothly and the guides were very knowledgeable about the different areas we visited. I loved the amazing animals of Galapagos, the Inca constructions of Machu Picchu etc and the scale & volume of water of Iguazu. Everyday there was a new adventure to be had. Thoroughly recommended!! Alison Richards - May 2014

Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Great, would recommend Bunniks to anyone wanting a small group experience 5
The trip was called Highlights of South America and Galapagos and that was what it was, every place visited was a highlight. Galapagos with its varied wildlife, the mystical Machu Picchu, the thunderous Iguazu Falls and the majesty of Christ the Redeemer in Rio. Sue Holmes - February 2014
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Outstanding, tour fantastic! 5
I liked the small size, the logistics of managing only 11 guests was great, booking in for planes, getting in and out of the buses, booking into hotels etc. For the tour itself it is a toss up between Machu Picchu and Iguazzu Falls for the ahhh factor! Sue Bennett - February 2014
Highlights of South America & the Galapagos Very high standard 4
All the guides were good. Each had their own impression on us. Paul Jensen - June 2013
