Day 1. Depart Australia - Arrive Mexico City

Mexico City is a fascinating place and many world class museums can be found here including the Anthropological Museum, Frida Kahlo Museum, Templo Mayor Museum, Bellas Artes Museum and Leon Trotsky’s house to name a few. Our sightseeing program in Mexico City is quite full so if you have an interest in visiting any of these museums we would recommend booking at least 2 nights pre tour accommodation to give you time to see those places that may be of particular interest to you.

Day 2. Mexico City

Our day begins with a tour of bustling Mexico City. We visit the Zocalo - the main city square - constructed from the stones of ancient palaces and temples, and the National Palace.

Day 3. Mexico City

After breakfast, we visit the site of Teotihuacan, considered one of the most impressive and mysterious archaeological sites in Mexico. The city was established in 100BC and the name Teotihuacan roughly translates as ‘Birthplace of the Gods’. We also visit the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe today, arguably the most important Christian pilgrimage site in Latin America. [B,L]

Day 4. Mexico City - Tuxtla - San Cristóbal

This morning we fly to Tuxtla and continue to Chiapa de Corzo and the spectacular Sumidero Canyon, which we’ll tour by boat. Enjoy lunch before we travel to charming San Cristóbal. [B,L]

Day 5. San Cristóbal

Special Experience: In the mountains surrounding San Cristóbal, we visit the indigenous villages of San Juan Chamula and Zincantan to learn about the Mayan culture and traditions still alive today. [B,L]

Day 6. San Cristóbal - Palenque

Driving through lush, green valleys, we travel to Palenque through the Tabasco region, stopping for lunch. Along the way we'll visit the beautiful turquoise waterfall of Roberto Barrios, cascading to form pools perfect for swimming. [B,D]

Day 7. Palenque - Villahermosa - Merida

Spend the morning discovering the incredible ancient Mayan site of Palenque, boasting several magnificent pyramids. In parts, it is still covered in lush, tropical jungle. This afternoon we'll fly to the historic 'White City' of Merida. [B]

Day 8. Merida - Chichén Itzá - Playa del Carmen

Another amazing day of antiquities - this morning we depart for Chichén Itzá, the most famous of all Mayan sites and home to the enormous step-pyramid of Kulkulkan. [B,L]

Day 9. Playa del Carmen

Enjoy a day at leisure in sunny Playa del Carmen. This evening we'll enjoy a group dinner to farewell Mexico. [B,D]

Day 10. Playa del Carmen - San Salvador - Guatemala City

The morning is at leisure before we fly to Guatemala and its fascinating hub, Guatemala City, later this afternoon. [B]

Day 11. Guatemala City - Flores

We’ll discover the city on a sightseeing tour this morning and visit the Ixchel and Popolvuh Museum, before lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we fly to Flores, on Lake Petén Itzá. [B,L]

Day 12. Tikal National Park Excursion

Special Experience: Visit the incredible Mayan ruins of Tikal, nestled amidst lush rainforest. The largest of Mayan cities during the Classic period 1,000 years ago, it represents one of the Mayan civilisation's most impressive achievements. [B,L]

Day 13. Flores - Guatemala City - Panajachel

Today we fly back to Guatemala City and make our way to the scenic lakeside town of Panajachel, stopping along the way at the archaeological site of Iximché. The afternoon is at leisure. [B]

Day 14. Panajachel

This morning we board a boat on stunning Lake Atitlán to visit the villages of Santiago Atitlán and San Juan la Laguna. [B]

At Bunnik Tours we don’t put specific age limits on our tours, but we also recognise some travellers may find our itineraries challenging.
We have a duty of care to all tour participants and the tour guides, so we do impose a firm policy on the level of fitness required by all our clients to attempt to ensure your safety and the safety of other travellers on our tours.
At Bunnik Tours our goal is for all our travellers to enjoy their tour, not struggle through it! Which is why we want to work with you to ensure you are on the best possible trip for your fitness level. We do reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding.
Bunnik Tours are for independently minded travellers with good levels of mobility.

Our tours include:
1. Generous amounts of free time
2. Lots of walking
3. Local and authentic experiences including various modes of transport and accommodation

In some regions travellers can also expect:
1. Long days of travelling, at times on dirt and gravel roads in Africa
2. Extended periods at high altitude (3,000-4,000 metres) in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Ethiopia
3. Extended periods of walking/hiking through humid forest areas in Rwanda, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico and Costa Rica
4. Limited medical facilities in remote areas

Bunnik Tours travellers are required to at least:
1. Be able to walk 2-3 hours on uneven surfaces
2. Walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills
3. Stand for 20 minutes without needing to sit down, often in hot/humid climates
4. Carry their own luggage
5. Get on and off various modes of transport without assistance, including small boats

Discover one of the most beautiful and ancient Mayan cities for an informative and historical guided tour. The thing that you'll find most striking about this ruins site is not only its pyramids, but its amazing setting and the staggering backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.

Cenote Santa Cruz – 4hrs – $95pp US
Discover the hidden marvels beneath your feet on the Yucatan Peninsula with a visit to Cenote Santa Cruz. Here you can explore the underground caverns and waterways and snorkel in the crystal clear fresh water amongst the tropical fish and beautiful cave formations. This tour includes return transfers, entrance fees and snorkeling equipment.

Guatemala

Pacaya Volcano Hike – 7hrs – $90pp US
Get up close and personal with a Guatemalan volcano! Pacaya Volcano is one of the country’s most active. Hike through volcanic vegetation and surreal landscapes on your way to the top, enjoying impressive views of three nearby volcanic peaks, including Agua, Fuego and Acatenango at the summit. Your excursion from Antigua to the volcano includes round-trip private transportation from your hotel, an adventure guide and a local guide, entrance fees and a box lunch with soft drinks.

Hotel Atitlan, Panajachel

Hotel Atitlan is one of Guatemala’s finest and most charming boutique hotels surrounded by botanical gardens. The hotel is situated 10 minutes from the main town of Panajachel on what was once the estate of a family owned coffee plantation. It is wonderfully decorated with hand-carved wood furnishings and ornate ceramic tiles. The design and décor reflect the elegant Spanish colonial style of an 18th century Guatemalan plantation. Outside, the gardens are abundant with roses, orchids, bougainvillea and azaleas.
