Drive north to Darvaza flaming crater, arriving at the border between the northern and southern regions of Turkmenistan. After unpacking our vehicles, we will walk around the crater and as we approach, it’s as if the gates of hell open up, as the locals call it. This natural gas field collapsed into a cavern and geologists intentionally set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane however what was thought to have been a short event, is now a spectacular flaming crater which has been burning since 1971.

After a brief visit to the Visitor’s Centre for an overview of Cham history and culture, walk along the forested paths to explore the ruins.
