You're probably familiar with some popular dishes (butter or tandoori chicken, samosas and koftas), but there is actually so much more to try! With Incredible India we've put together a list of some fantastic dishes from around the country! Keep these in mind if you’re considering a trip to India (or just need some culinary inspiration).

North India 

You’ve just arrived in Delhi, Agra or Jaipur and want to try something authentic. Fuel up on these dishes:             

  • Paratha – meaning 'layers of cooked dough', this delicious flatbread is crispy and flaky. Perfect on it's own or as an accompaniment with most Indian dishes.
  • Niharis - if you're feeling a little more adventurous, niharis is a slow cooked stew containing mutton!
  • Jalebi - seeking something sweet? Jalebi are a traditional breakfast that consist of deep fried swirls of flour, dipped in a sugary syrup.

East India 

The eastern areas of India focus on steaming, stir-frying, smoking and fermenting foods! So what should you sample in Kolkata?

  • Panta bhaat– this rice-based dish is usually prepared by soaking rice overnight and serving in the morning with salt, onion and chili.

  • Litti - these little dough balls can be served with chokha, a mashed relish made from eggplant, potatoes and tomatoes.

West India 

Food in the west is characterised by rice and fish! When in Mumbai, see if any of these dishes take your fancy!

  • Kadhi – a gravy dish prepared with yogurt, spices, rice and lentils.

  • Akuri - usually prepared from scrambled eggs mixed with onions, tomatoes and green chilies.

What to try when in Kochi, Periyar or Madurai?

  • Dosa - crepe like pancakes that are made using batter of fermented rice and lentils! These can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

  • Sambar - a delicious stew consisting of seasoned vegetables, lentils and tamarind! This tangy delicacy is a staple in South Indian cuisine.
