Aurora Expedition Ships

Sylvia Earle

Sylvia Earle image

This ground-breaking new state-of-the-art vessel is one of the most advanced expedition ships in the world.

Proudly named after Aurora Expeditions' highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, this 104-metre ship is our second, purpose-built expedition vessel. Capable of negotiating the strongest winds and waves, the Sylvia Earle is built to world-class polar standards – designed in close consultation with our expedition specialists, taking advantage of our more than 28 years of experience.

Accommodating an average of 126 passengers per voyage including kayakers and divers (see itinerary pages for individual voyage passenger numbers), the Sylvia Earle is redefining expedition cruising for the future. Not only is the ship bigger to contend with adverse weather conditions, its added creature comforts make for a more enjoyable journey out on the open ocean. The Sylvia Earle remains true to our ethos and focus on multiple landings, flexible itineraries and family atmosphere!

Please note: Aurora Expeditions do not claim that the Greg Mortimer will prevent or cure motion or seasickness.

Ship Features

As a modern and custom-designed ship, the Sylvia Earle is at the cutting edge of nautical technology. Robust, powerful and built with our guests in mind, the Sylvia Earle will make your journey a breeze!

Sylvia Earle - bow

X-BOW®
Our expeditions face some of the worst Mother Nature can throw at us. However, just as you will find on the Greg Mortimer, this won't be problem on the Sylvia Earle with the introduction of the patented X-BOW®, created by Norwegian ship designer ULSTEIN. As one of the leaders in marine engineering, ULSTEIN® is an inverted bow concept that's been built on over 100 vessels in the shipping industry and allows for more gentle sea crossings*, improved comfort and reduced emissions. Excitingly, we are the first expedition cruise operator to utilise this technology for the challenging open ocean waves!

*Aurora Expeditions do not claim that this will prevent or cure motion or seasickness.

Sylvia Earle glass atrium

Glass Atrium Lounge
Although there is no doubt that you'll love the aesthetics of the Sylvia Earle, we are all here to admire the spectacular landscape and spot the elusive wildlife in their natural habitat. To ensure you get the best views possible, the new ship features unique glass atrium lounge, custom-built for the Sylvia Earle.

Experience the Glass Atrium Lounge inside the bow, featuring huge windows and superb views to the front of the ship.

Sylvia Earle zodiac launching platforms

Zodiac launching platform
Zodiacs are a vital part of getting up close and personal on your adventure – sneaking into areas that the Sylvia Earle can't reach.  Our ships carry many Zodiacs, which you can board via four dedicated, sea-level launching platforms. These platforms make boarding the Zodiacs as quick, efficient and safe as possible, minimising wait times and getting you closer to the action for longer.

Whether you’re Zodiac cruising through awe-inspiring fjords in search of wildlife or making a quick transit from ship to a shore landing site, these sturdy crafts will play an integral role in your expedition experience.

Sylvia Earle zodiac docks

Custom-built activity platform
Regardless of your destination, we offer a number of additional activities to allow you to see more of the environment.

We offer a range of add-on adventure activities from kayaking and diving to climbing and ski touring, and the Sylvia Earle  is designed to support these activities, making the transition from ship to sea or shore as smooth as possible. We built the spacious activity preparation areas and loading platforms in consultation with our expert activity guides.

You will also have access to lockers and rapid drying areas for dry suits and wet suits, to give your gear the best chance to dry between excursions.

Travelling in a responsible way
Climate change and carbon emissions continue to be major issues that everyone needs to be aware of and actively managing. We at Aurora Expeditions treat preserving and protecting the environment with the upmost importance and this is reflected in several features on the Sylvia Earle.

This includes giving off 80% less emissions into the air and sea with its Tier 3 engine, lower energy consumption, high fuel efficiency, reduced light pollution for minimal wildlife disruption and lower on-board plastic use. Furthermore, the ship will have state-of-the-art virtual anchoring technology, meaning the ship can hold its position using its own propellers and thrusters while launching Zodiacs and kayaks without disturbing the sea floor.

Safety features
Safety is always a critical element of Aurora Expeditions' operations, with the Sylvia Earle showcasing the most up-to-date and concise safety technology.  The Sylvia Earle features industry-leading safety technology that exceeds the requirements for a ship of this size with a world class return-to-port equipment, which duplicates the propulsion system, enabling the ship to maintain operating systems and comfort in the event of engine failure. The ship will also feature a fully-stocked medical clinic designed for use in remote areas.

Safety continues to be an issue that our team takes very seriously and the Sylvia Earle allows us to create an environment where you can concentrate on the brilliant landscape and wildlife, without worrying about your wellbeing.

Overview

After a long day exploring the wonders of your destination, you need somewhere where you can simply relax and take a break from real life.

Our second purpose-built expedition vessel honours the highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, Sylvia Earle. As the first woman to become chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and named byTimeMagazine as its first"Hero for the Planet" in 1998 – this vessel pays tribute to Sylvia’s long-standing conservation efforts for marine protected areas and ocean wildlife.

Combining comfort with style, all staterooms have twin or king bed configuration options, private bathrooms,  daily cabin service, as well as all the basic amenities that you'll need onboard. Additionally, there are private balconies in roughly 80% of the staterooms, allowing you to watch the world float past and take in the salty air of the open ocean. We have introduced four cabin categories to our Balcony Stateroom category. These have been classified into category Superior, A, B or C depending on the cabin size and deck location.

Of course, the prospect of unexpected wildlife encounters is always on the table so your accommodation needs to have a view as well! Across three of the four stateroom categories, you'll find large floor to ceiling windows that offer prime observation opportunities around the clock.

Another great feature of the accommodation on the Sylvia Earle are the interconnecting staterooms. If you're part of a family or group who want some privacy, but still want to be close to each other, these staterooms are the perfect option.

Regardless of your chosen stateroom, you can enjoy full service accommodation on the Sylvia Earle!
