The impact of tourism on Kilimanjaro
In northeast Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro looms on the horizon, standing as the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 metres high. In recent years, Kilimanjaro’s iconic ice cap has begun to melt due to the effects of climate change. A devastating amount of deforestation has also occurred, resulting in poor living conditions for the communities who dwell in its surrounding areas.
This popular travel destination is also impacted by the waste left behind by tourists, and the local communities are unaware of the subsequent impact to the environment.

What is the Greenmanjaro Foundation?
Greenmanjaro collaborates with local partners to improve the environment of this iconic landmark through the Kilimanjaro Climate Care Projects, promoting SDG-aligned goals within 100 km of Kilimanjaro.
Focused on youth aged 6–18, they teach kids to clean, recycle, rekindle, and cultivate, fostering awareness and action for their vulnerable environment. By inspiring students, parents and communities to reverse climate change step by step, Greenmanjaro builds a movement we’re proud to support.
How does Bunnik Tours support Greenmanjaro?
For every Bunnik Tour booked that visits the beautiful country of Tanzania, we donate $20 to the Greenmanjaro initiative. This contributes to a range of items and projects that supports the organisation in carrying out their education programs in primary and secondary classrooms.
Some of these teaching methods include:
- Extra-curricular resources for secondary schools, the Kilimanjaro Lighthouse Educational programme, featuring the student book, The future is in our hands, and the teacher’s Tips & Tricks manual, produced in 2024.
- Tabletop plastic recycling machines, easily transportable between schools, to showcase the recycling process and demonstrate the transformation into new upcycled products.
- Catering and transport for dedicated operation clean-up days, organised in collaboration with local partners and schools, to collect waste from forests and riverbanks.
- Purchasing planting tools and various fruit and shade tree species for large-scale tree planting projects. Children learn to plant and nuture trees to ensure healthy growth.
- Materials to build and cultivate a school veggie garden, including fencing and irrigation, to teach children how to grow veggies and the importance of a diverse diet.
