Sun Festival, Special Departure

Sun Festival

Our October 12, 2020 departure will experience this unique event. Ramses II built his temple at Abu Simbel so that the internal chamber would light up two times a year: once on the anniversary of his ascension to the throne (in February), and once on his birthday (in October). Every year on the Sun Festival, crowds gather before sunrise to observe the stream of light gradually sneaking through the stone and enlightening the statuettes of Ramses, Ra and Amun in the central chamber.

Day 6. Cairo - Luxor

This morning we fly to Luxor in Upper Egypt. Here we’ll explore the fascinating Karnak Temple, dedicated to the Pharaoh Amun. Approximately 30 pharaohs contributed to the temple’s structure over time, which explains its monumental size! We’ll then visit Luxor Temple, once connected to Karnak Temple by a 3-kilometre-long Avenue of Sphinxes. Luxor Temple is also home to a 25-metre pink granite obelisk, which was part of a matching pair until the 1830s when one was given to France. It now stands in the centre of the Place de la Concorde in Paris. [B]

Day 7. Luxor

Enjoy the day at leisure to relax or explore at your own pace. [B]

Day 8. Luxor - Nile Cruise

Walking Man

Our first stop today is the Valley of the Kings. Carved deep into the limestone rock, each tomb has a similar pattern of three corridors, an antechamber and a sarcophagus chamber. We’ll be able to descend into some of the tombs to see examples of the elaborate and incredibly well-preserved hieroglyphic paintings.
Our next destination is the Temple of Hatshepsut. Queen Hatshepsut was one of only a few women to be given the title of pharaoh. We’ll then visit the Colossi of Memnon. [B,L,D]

Walking Man

Level of fitness: This symbol indicates 2+ hours of walking, often across uneven ground and in areas of high altitude or heat and humidity.

Please note: Due to local laws and regulations, the only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Horus in Edfu is by horse and carriage. You are welcome to explore Edfu independently or stay on board the cruise to enjoy the ship’s facilities if you would prefer.
Please note: The luxury Nile cruise is not a private charter, and is shared with non Bunnik passengers. It operates between the cities of Luxor and Aswan which are only 240km apart, meaning this could easily be covered in only 1 or 2 days without stops. However, this allows us to spend more time sightseeing along the way, allowing you to relax and see life along the river.
