As one of the wildest and most remote places on earth, South Georgia has one of the largest populations of penguins (about 4 million pairs in peak breeding season), and one of the densest examples of marine biodiversity in the world. All this in an area only slightly bigger than Greater Adelaide! The current population is made entirely of scientific and museum staff who live there seasonally. If you’re ready for a unique experience, a South Georgia tour is the holiday for you. You’ll witness the spectacular sight of albatrosses on Prion Island, explore the abandoned whaling village of Stromness, discover the largest king penguin colonies in the Gold Harbour and more! South Georgia FAQs

If you are a nature-lover who adores incredible wildlife, then a South Georgia expedition cruise is perfect for you! Bunnik Tours is proud to be partnering with Oceanwide Expeditions to offer the ultimate in polar cruising. On an independent travel tour with Bunnik Tours, you can discover the largest king penguin colonies in St Andrews Bay, see magnificent mountain scapes at Fortuna Bay, venture to Prion Island to experience the magnificent albatrosses, see elephant seals in the Gold Harbour, explore an abandoned whaling station in Grytviken and more!

You can book a South Georgia holiday from the months of November to March, as the island is closed off for the remainder of the year due to heavy snows and extreme temperatures. The island is only accessible by smaller expedition ships that carry visit permits.

The best time to book a South Georgia small group tour is between January to February, and November to December. This is the perfect time as the temperatures are at the warmest, reaching an average of 8° celcius. These months are also great for wildlife viewing as the penguin population is at its peak, and albatrosses are visible and swim in the open seas.

South Georgia is well known for its magnificent wildlife and intriguing history.

Wildlife
South Georgia is known as the world’s most important breeding site for seabirds. It’s home to over 10 million birds, and has 78 different bird species. This includes a variety of penguin species such as king penguins, macaroni penguin, magellanic penguin and the rock-hopper penguin. South Georgia is also famous for the wandering albatrosses, elephant seals and reindeer.

History
South Georgia’s history is fascinating, being home to ancient whaling stations and even the grave of the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. South Georgia residents have been using the whaling stations since 1904, and since they stopped in the 1960’s, penguins have inhabited the space. On a South Georgia tour with Bunnik Tours, you can also explore the local church and the whaling history museum.
