The Otway Fly Treetop Walk

Almost halfway along the spectacular Great Ocean Road at Cape Otway, you’ll discover a dense, green rainforest wilderness called, unsurprisingly, Great Cape Otway National Park. Most visitors driving the Great Ocean Road never venture too far inland and tend to stick to the iconic coastal route which is such a shame. Inland lies some genuinely stunning and worthwhile places to visit.

My daughter and I were lucky enough to check out this beautiful location recently. In my eyes, the jewel in the crown is the well-hidden Otway Fly Treetop Walk, as it allows guests to immerse themselves in the environment and truly get up close and personal with mother nature.

Facts

To paint a picture, let’s start with some fast facts about the Otway Fly Treetop Walk. Comprising a massive steel structure approximately 600 metres long, the walk will have you winding your way through the verdant rainforest with its various viewing platforms, including one that is almost 50 metres high. The average height of the walkway is 30 metres and gives you an elevated experience like a bird flying through the tree canopy. The walkway will have a slight sway to it as you wander, so be prepared for this; (it’s like walking on a cruise ship after a few gin and tonics). That said, you do get used to it quickly and the steel structure is very stable.

After leaving the information centre (boasting a great café with barista coffee and tasty lamingtons… just saying), you start with a pretty walk along the forest floor for around a kilometre before you hit the elevated walkway. All in all, the entire walk would be a good two and half kilometres long, including both the forest path and the walkway. Some of which is uphill, so bring good walking shoes and an umbrella as it rains a lot in this region.

The viewing platforms (some undercover) make great places to pause and enjoy the scenery and take photos of both the lushness below and the green canopy surrounding you. On our adventure, we were lucky enough to see lots of colourful birds in the treetops as well as sitting on the railings of the walkway, so make sure you have your cameras at the ready.

Green shots

This beautiful pocket of Victorian wilderness is really the who’s who of giant trees. Giant eucalyptus, stringybark, grey gum, blue gum, beech and blackwood just to mention a few. Some with trunk girths of over 10 metres, it is truly a spiritual place to explore and experience. The forest floor is covered in moss and different fun-guys (fungi, sorry bad dad joke) and the tallest, lushest ferns I have ever seen. The constant drizzle and moisture in the air has surely helped the region flourish into the impressive sight before you.

The Otway Fly Treetop Walk gives you an unusual perspective of nature, allowing you to explore the magnificent rainforest from the ground and from the air, plus it’s also a completely different type of experience compared with other scenes along the Great Ocean Road. It’s certainly worth the time to visit!
