Some things to note

Some things to note icon
  • A Letter of Invitation is required to be able to obtain a Turkmenistan visa. The Letter of Invitation will be arranged for you as a part of this tour. Please refer to the Passports and Visa section of our website for further information.
  • It is advised that women bring a scarf for travelling through this region to cover their head when going inside places of worship.
  • On day 24, there will be shared toilet and shower facilities when overnighting in the Yurts.
  • Single bookings will be required to share for one night, when staying overnight in the Yurt camp. It will be based on twin share (2 people) per Yurt.
  • This tour is best suited for adventurous travellers who are in good physical condition, as it involves remote and off-the-beaten-path destinations. It's important to be prepared for unexpected changes to the itinerary, as this tour explores one of the last frontiers of tourism. Additionally, please keep in mind that the standards and accommodations may not always match those to which you are accustomed. To fully enjoy this journey, flexibility, a positive attitude and a willingness to embrace the adventure are essential.
  • Western toilets are not common in this part of the world. Squat toilets are what you will come across majority of the time. Usually located outside of establishments, such as restaurants. There will also be some instances, on-route or border-crossings, where there are no facilities at all - meaning a ‘wildness’ stop! There are no facilities on the vehicles.
  • This tour involves some long travel days by private vehicle, where conditions may be uneven and dusty. Be prepared for winding (but incredibly scenic) roads, many speedbumps and at times heavy traffic that will all affect travel times.  Some smaller vehicles will be used due to the nature of the roads and some of the locations.
  • Smaller vehicles will be used from arrival in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan up until we reach Almaty, Kazakhstan. This means the group will be split over two vehicles for this period, with the Tour Leader in one vehicle and the Local Guide in the other.
  • Navigating border crossings can pose challenges and may require some additional time and patience. It will also require you to be able to manage all your own luggage for an extended period of time, over uneven surfaces and in the elements.
  • Expect a range of temperatures, from below freezing in the mountains to scorching highs exceeding 40 ºC in the desert and steppe regions. It's advisable to check the online weather forecast before your visit and pack your attire accordingly to cover a range of climates.
