The real showstopper, however, is Tutankhamun. For the first time, more than 5,000 treasures from the boy king’s tomb are displayed together, including his legendary golden burial mask. Add striking modern architecture, beautifully restored objects and spectacular views towards the Giza pyramids, and this becomes far more than a museum visit. It’s a journey through the world of the pharaohs, with plenty of gold, grandeur and genuine “pinch me” moments along the way.
More than 20 years in the making, the GEM is a must-see on any Egyptian adventure and an unforgettable place to begin uncovering the stories of this extraordinary civilisation.
Best of all, a visit is included on every Bunnik Tours itinerary currently going to Egypt!

A First look at the GEM
Egypt lover and our Bunnik Tours founder Marion Bunnik recently stepped inside the Grand Egyptian Museum and her first impressions were nothing short of grand.
“The museum is built like a pyramid and is very impressive, especially from the outside,” Marion said. “A large square leads you towards the entrance, and golf carts are available for visitors who need them.”
Then come the doors… and the wow factor.
“The entrance hall is amazing and incredibly large, with magnificent statues and wonderful artistic effects,” Marion said. “Escalators and steps take you to the different levels and exhibition rooms, with something impressive to see at every turn.”
Visitors exploring without an Egyptologist guide can request an audio service in their preferred language or arrange a museum guide. But however you choose to discover the GEM, Marion’s verdict is clear: from the pyramid-inspired exterior to the soaring entrance hall, this remarkable museum knows how to make a first impression!

Highlights to Look Out For
The museum offers plenty to see, so it is worth planning your visit around the exhibits and objects that interest you most. The following 5 highlights are ones we suggest you keep an eye out for.
Statue of Ramesses II
It's hard to miss the Statue of Ramesses II. Standing more than 11 metres tall, it is one of the first sights to greet visitors entering the Grand Egyptian Museum. Carved from red granite and more than 3,200 years old, this remarkable statue is simply breathtaking.

The Golden Burial Mask of Tutankhamun
Arguably the most iconic and recognisable ancient Egyptian artefact is the golden burial mask of Tutankhamun. Made from more than 10 kilograms of gold, this extraordinary artefact is the centrepiece of the Tutankhamun galleries, which bring together more than 5,000 treasures from the boy king's tomb under one roof for the first time!

Khufu’s Boats Museum
Dating back some 4,500 years, King Khufu’s Solar Boat is one of the Grand Egyptian Museum’s most remarkable treasures. Originally found beside the Great Pyramid, the vessel was constructed using 1,224 pieces of Lebanese cedar wood, ingeniously assembled without nails. Housed in its own dedicated museum space, this ancient wonder is an absolute must-see during your GEM visit. The second boat is currently being constructed alongside the first, offering visitors a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the painstaking work involved in preserving and showcasing these ancient vessels.

Statue of Queen Hatshepsut
The colossal statue of Queen Hatshepsut showcases the remarkable female pharaoh who ruled Egypt over 3,500 years ago. Depicted with the traditional symbols of kingship, it stands as a powerful reminder of her groundbreaking reign and is a must-see during your visit to the GEM.

Ostraca – Records of Daily Life
Often described as the notepads of the ancient world, ostraca were pieces of broken pottery or limestone used to record all aspects of everyday life. These artefacts provide a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of ancient Egyptians, revealing everything from shopping lists and financial records to artwork and even humorous doodles. Make sure to spend some time exploring these interesting artefacts.
Why it's a Must-see in Cairo
The Grand Egyptian Museum brings ancient Egypt to life through immersive galleries, world-class displays and carefully curated storytelling that reveal the people, beliefs and achievements behind one of history's greatest civilisations. More than just a collection of artefacts, it provides valuable context for the pyramids, temples and tombs travellers encounter throughout Egypt. Its convenient location near the Giza Pyramid Complex makes it easy to combine two of the country's most iconic attractions in one day, while its striking architecture, interactive exhibits and breathtaking artefacts ensure it appeals to far more than just history enthusiasts.
Whether you're a first-time visitor, photography lover, family or lifelong Egypt enthusiast, the GEM offers an unforgettable glimpse into the ancient world.
